How to Track Newborn Sleep Without Complicated Spreadsheets
A practical guide to recording naps, nighttime sleep and daily patterns without adding stress to your day.
Start with the details you want to remember
A sleep log can be a short timeline: when a sleep session began and when your baby woke. Some families also note whether it was a nap or nighttime sleep, or add a brief note about the handoff between caregivers. A notebook, printable sheet or phone app can all work; choose the format that is easiest to update.
Record the date when a session crosses midnight
Write the actual start and end dates, especially for overnight sessions. This keeps the length of a session clear when it begins one evening and ends the next morning. The free sleep duration calculator can calculate elapsed time, and the printable baby sleep log gives you space to keep several entries together.
Keep observations separate from expectations
Your notes describe what happened. They do not need to become a target schedule or a judgment about whether a day was “good.” If you have a health or sleep-safety question, use current guidance from a qualified professional or an official source such as the CDC's safe sleep guidance. A log is not medical advice.
Use one routine record if that helps
Newbornly's iPhone app includes a sleep timer, daily timeline and sleep summaries alongside feeding and diaper tracking. You can also use the free printable above without downloading the app. See the Baby Sleep Tracker feature for what the app currently offers.
