Baby Sleep Log: How to Record Naps and Nighttime Sleep
Learn what to write in a baby sleep log, how to record sessions across midnight, and where to find a free printable sheet.
A baby sleep log is a record of sessions, not a timetable your baby has to follow. It can help you remember when a nap or nighttime session began and ended, especially when caregivers are sharing the day.
Keep the key fields together
For each session, record the date, start time and end time. Add a short note such as “nap” or “overnight” only if that distinction helps you. The free printable Baby Sleep Log includes a total-duration field that calculates elapsed time in the browser.
Record the next date when sleep crosses midnight
For a session that starts before midnight and ends the next morning, use the actual end time and let the log treat it as the following day. The Sleep Duration Calculator also asks for both complete dates, which makes an overnight interval clear.
Keep tracking separate from sleep-safety guidance
A log describes timing; it does not evaluate a sleep environment or recommend a schedule. For safety questions, use current professional advice and official guidance such as the CDC's information on helping babies sleep safely. Ask a qualified healthcare professional about concerns specific to your baby.
Newbornly's iPhone app offers a sleep timer, daily timeline and sleep summaries. The printable remains free to use without an account or app download. See the Baby Sleep Tracker feature.
